WebOrganic expands one-stop solution to help schools implement eLearning

Press Release (18 Apr 2012)

Following its successful establishment as a hub to bridge the digital divide, WebOrganic has announced plans to bring forward the frontiers of digital learning still further in 2012.

Since its inception, WebOrganic quickly established itself as student’s one-stop Internet learning solution provider – the essential link between technology vendors, schools and students – and setting up a network of "Seed Schools" as well as 14 regional support centres. This has enabled it to reach out to almost 24,000 underprivileged students in 10 districts and provide services to over 7,000 families, supporting them to get low-cost access to the Internet at home for learning.

With its philosophy of offering Hope, Chance and Choice, the organisation has formulated a package of major new initiatives. They are designed to use technology to level the educational playing field and create equal learning opportunities for Hong Kong's younger generation regardless of wealth or social status.

"WebOrganic is establishing an eLearning ecosystem," explained Erwin Huang, CEO of WebOrganic, “’Seed Schools’, as a platform for communications and interactions with students and their parents, act as an important bridge between WebOrganic and the service recipients," he said.

"By persuading teachers to understand the value of eLearning, we are able to pass on the message of equality and opportunity, as well as healthy physical and moral use of the Internet. This in turn benefits individual students and their families, as well as the overall community."

WebOrganic's new plans will ride on its current community efforts which involve mentoring, counseling and training for parents, as well as expanding its product offering. The rollout, which is scheduled for the second half of 2012, will comprise key strategies, including:

• extending its reach by developing 10 more regional support centres.

• helping ethnic minorities with language support and services, including providing non-Chinese language workshops to introduce them to eLearning.

• providing funding and support to families that are not eligible for Government allowances, enabling them to enjoy the same equipment as other students in their daily academic life. We will strengthen our services including mentorship programme, support hotlines and referral services, with a focus on families with special needs, such as Internet addiction or cyber bullying.

• launching the Tree School Program to deliver 1-on-1 computing and tablet offerings.

"Technology is probably the most important educational enabler today. It has the potential to create a virtual environment where a student's potential is limited, not by their parent's wealth or social standing, but by their own ability to learn and desire to succeed," said Huang.

"WebOrganic is proving that students can enhance creativity and actualize their potentials when given access to basic technology and a network connection. Our goal in 2012 is to promote that message throughout the community and in schools, to let more teachers and parents know about the help we provide and the impact it can have on their children's academic life and long-term future," he said.

Electricity supply termination notice

Due to termination of electricity supply, the operation hours of WebOrganic service hotline 292-292-00 will be changed to 11am to 3pm on 21 Apr 2012. The service will resume normal on the day after.

HKCSS Launches WebOrganic Service Brand

WebOrganic supports learning through the Internet for
150,000 students from low-income families

[28 June 2011]  Information technology (IT) has become an indispensable tool for modern education. Effective use of IT enhances and meets the student’s learning interest and needs. However, students without the means and access to IT are deprived of opportunities available to others with the means and access to IT.

To bridge the digital divide, Internet Learning Resource Centre, a social enterprise wholly owned by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, launches the Internet Learning Support Programme funded by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer of the Hong Kong SAR Government. It is a five-year Program to assist around 150,000 students from low-income families to purchase computers and pay for broadband services so that they can learn through the Internet at home.

Ms. Christine Fang, Chief Executive of HKCSS said, “The guiding principle of “WebOrganic” is to provide equal opportunities for all. WebOrganic is a social enterprise operating under commercial principles and to provide a equal starting point for students from low-income families so as to develop their full potential when students gain more IT and community support resources.”

“Through the collaboration of the Hong Kong SAR Government and the IT, education and social service sectors, WebOrganic will bring Hope, Chance and Choice to students”, said Ms. Fang.

High quality service from IT companies

Operating under the “best practice” commercial principle, WebOrganic has teamed up with well known international and local IT products and service partners for the delivery of an integrated service to students, which includes the supply of high quality products, services, technical support and training. Its strategic partners include the world’s renowned computer manufacturer Lenovo, software provider Microsoft, network infrastructure provider Cisco, semiconductor chip maker Intel, local home broadband service provider PCCW, local mobile Internet service provider one2free, as well as content providers Pearson, Oxford and Hong Kong Educational Publishing Company.

The goal of WebOrganic is to provide the highest quality and value-for-money equipments and services to needy students. We have selected world-class suppliers and the strongest local broadband service providers to provide students the best possible products and services that connect them to the rest of Hong Kong and the world. This is the core value of WebOrganic”, added Mr. Huang.

Social service organizations join hands to support low-income families

WebOrganic has teamed up with 11 social welfare organizations, which include Aberdeen Kai-fong Welfare Association Social Service Centre, HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre, Hong Kong Christian Service, Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, Life Workshop, St James' Settlement, The Friends of Scouting, The Salvation Army, and YMCA of Hong Kong. These organizations will operate 14 community service centres in 10 districts in Hong Kong and provide support services to low-income families. These services include computer distribution and delivery, technical support, presentations to schools, training and seminars for students and their parents, as well as promotions on the positive use of the Internet to facilitate healthy eLearning.

In addition, WebOrganic also provides the following services in order to render comprehensive support to the students on eLearning: (1) counselling support hotline to help resolve Internet problems by Hong Kong Family Welfare Society; (2) systematic service for mentorship recruitment and matching, training, supervision and experience sharing offered by YMCA of Hong Kong; (3) promotion of eLearning through multiple interactive training sessions and various training materials provided by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.

WebOrganic is also establishing a WebOrganic Fund for the purpose of providing additional financial support to families with special needs.
